Tarmac Sealing,
and Why It Matters
Tarmac fades. The rich black surface it had when new slowly turns grey as sunlight and weather draw the binding resins out of it. Sealing restores the colour, replaces those lost resins, and protects the surface for years to come.
We restore tarmac with a professional grade, water based acrylic sealer made specifically for tarmac and asphalt. This is a very different product from the cheap bitumen paints found in DIY stores. Rather than simply painting over the surface, it soaks in, rebinds the tarmac and puts back what the weather has taken out.
Six reasons to seal your tarmac
1 Restores a rich, like new colour
Faded, grey and patchy tarmac is transformed back to a deep, even finish. The change is dramatic and gives your whole property an immediate lift in kerb appeal.
2 Replaces lost resins
Sun and rain slowly strip the resins that hold tarmac together, which is why old surfaces shed loose stones. The sealer restores those resins and rebinds the surface.
3 Forms a protective barrier
Once cured, the sealer shields the tarmac from UV, weathering and everyday wear, slowing down the fading and breakdown that untreated surfaces suffer.
4 Far more than a paint
This is a hard wearing acrylic restorer, originally formulated for commercial use. It bonds with the tarmac itself rather than sitting on top like a bitumen paint.
5 Extends the life of your drive
By rebinding the surface and protecting it from further deterioration, sealing helps you get years more service from your tarmac and can delay the major cost of a full re-lay.
6 A choice of colours
Classic black is the most popular choice, but red and green are also available, ideal for restoring coloured driveways, paths and play areas to their original look.
What happens on the day
Clean and pre-treat
Moss and algae are treated, then the surface is carefully cleaned at reduced pressure to protect the tarmac, and loose stones are swept away.
Repair and dry out
Cracks and holes are repaired so the surface is sound. The tarmac then needs 2 to 3 dry days so it is completely dry before sealing.
Apply the sealer
The sealer is roller applied in even coats, with edges cut in by brush, typically two coats for a full, lasting finish.
Cure and protect
You can walk on the surface after a few hours. The sealer then cures to full hardness over the following days.
Choose your colour
Black
The classic choice. Restores that deep, freshly laid look and suits any property. Our most popular finish by far.
Red
Brings faded red tarmac driveways and paths back to their original warmth and depth of colour.
Green
Ideal for restoring green tarmac paths, tennis courts and play areas to a crisp, well kept finish.
Good to know
- Two visits, done properly. Cleaning and sealing happen on separate visits, with 2 to 3 dry days in between. The tarmac must be completely dry for the sealer to bond.
- Weather matters. Sealing needs mild, dry conditions and no rain for at least 6 hours afterwards, so we schedule around the forecast.
- Drying times. Foot traffic is fine after 2 to 3 hours. Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours, a little longer in cooler weather, while the sealer fully cures.
- Honest advice. If your tarmac needs repairs before sealing, we will tell you and put them right first, so the finish lasts.
